Manchester United shortlist Inter Milan coach Simone Inzaghi for the permanent manager position

According to Italian publication Corriere Dello Sport (h/t Daily Mail Online), Manchester United have been in contact with Inter Milan coach Simone Inzaghi to discuss a potential move to Old Trafford for the permanent manager position. He has done a great job at the San Siro since taking over the job from Antonio Conte at the start of this season.

Man United are managed by Ralf Rangnick on an interim basis, who is expected to move upstairs as a consultant at the end of this campaign. That naturally requires us to earmark a replacement for the German, and the Red Devils have looked at Inzaghi as a result.

The Inter boss is tied down until 2023, and the Nerazzurri board is interested in extending that deal. The English club is not the only one who has shown an interest as Atletico Madrid are eyeing him as a replacement for Diogo Simeone. Interestingly enough, the Italian coach is set to start an “in-depth English course” as he has a desire to move out of Italy.

Who is Simone Inzaghi?

The 45-year-old boss took over the managerial helm at Lazio in 2016 after he impressed with their youth teams in the past few seasons. That was his first stint as a senior team manager; he spent five years with them, helping them to the Coppa Italia title in 2019. He even helped them qualify for the UEFA Champions League, which is a big achievement for the Rome-based side.

Following the 2020-21 campaign, the Italian manager was appointed as the coach of the Serie A holders. However, they saw some of their key figures leave, such as Conte, Romelu Lukaku and Achraf Hakimi- reducing their quality in the process.

Many thought that the Nerazzurri boss would not replicate the success from last season, but the doubters were eventually proven wrong. They are currently leading the league table by one point over city rivals AC Milan with a match in hand. Moreover, he has helped Inter qualify for the UCL knockout stages- something Conte failed to do in Italy last season.

The former Lazio man has already won the Supercoppa Italiana trophy at his new club after beating Juve in the final. Should the Manchester-based club try for his services, it would make for a wise move. He has garnered plenty of experience in Italy and is managing one of the top teams in Europe currently.

Only time will tell if we will go down this route or not, but it is good to see that the club is planning for the future up ahead. It is very important that we choose our next permanent manager carefully. Some of our club’s best players are in the peak phase of their careers and it would be a shame to waste it with an incompetent boss at the helm.

No manager since Sir Alex Ferguson has given fans the same feeling of long-term security. While such a process requires patience, we need a manager who is worthy of being patient for. Whether Inzaghi ends up being that man is something only time will tell.
