Atletico Madrid eyeing Manchester United star Diogo Dalot to replace Kieran Trippier

According to the Spanish publication AS (h/t ESPN), Atletico Madrid have shortlisted Manchester United right-back Diogo Dalot among others to replace Keiran Trippier. The latter left the Wanda Metropolitano to join Newcastle United this month which has left the Spanish champions short-staffed in the position.

Daniel Wass of Valencia is still the primary target for Atletico, but they have included Dalot alongside two others if they fail to get their man. Los Ches will not sell Wass unless they could find a replacement of their own, meaning the whole merry go round of right-backs will have to wait.

Atletico are also keeping tabs on VFB Stuttgart’s Pablo Maffeo and FC Salzburg’s Rasmus Christensen. It remains to be seen whether they would make an official approach for the Man United star in the coming days before the winter market closes down.

No chance!

Diogo Simeone’s side can try all they want, but the Manchester club should not sell the 22-year-old based on our current circumstances. He is our best option in the fullback area, considering how his playstyle suits the system and tactics employed by Ralf Rangnick.

The only way we should even contemplate selling the Portuguese star is if the Spanish club makes an offer that we simply cannot refuse. Even then, we should bring in a replacement who can take Dalot’s place in the squad.

Our only other choice is Aaran Wan-Bissaka, whose attacking attributes are often questionable at best. Dalot has fared well under Rangnick when compared to the Englishman’s displays so far.

Moreover, we will face the Colchoneros in the Champions League round of 16 next month, which gives us more reason not to sell the defender, that too to a direct rival. Dalot has impressed overall during the reign of the German manager and could continue to build on that in the future.

The Portuguese right-back is likely to start ahead of Wan-Bissaka for us. If we are considering moving out someone, it should be the latter. But since we are competing in multiple competitions this season, it would be wise to keep the squad intact as much as possible at least until next summer.
