According to transfer news from journalist Ekrem Konur (h/t ESPN), Flamengo are in talks with Manchester United over a permanent move for Andreas Pereira.
The 26-year-old joined the Brazilian club in the summer on an initial loan deal. Since making the move to his home country, Pereira has managed to contribute to 6 goals in 25 games. But despite all of this, Flamengo failed to retain the league title.
However, that has not affected their decision of sealing a permanent move for the midfielder. The Campeonato Brasileiro Serie A side is currently in talks with Man United over
securing a permanent transfer, but it remains to be seen how much the Red Devils churn out of this deal. The central midfielder still has 18 months left on his contract, as he signed a four-year deal in 2019, with the option to extend it for a further year.
The Brazilian ace signed for us in 2012, as he arrived from the youth setup of PSV Eindhoven. Big things were expected from the young midfielder as he made his way through our ranks before being promoted to the senior set-up under the tutelage of Louis van Gaal.
However, Jose Mourinho was never a big fan of the player. Thus, the South American star had to seal loan moves to Lazio and Valencia in consecutive seasons. He formed part of the first-team set-up in the 2018/19 campaign and continued to play a key part in the squad during the first full campaign of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.
Eventually, he had to secure a loan deal to Lazio again in 2020 before joining Flamengo this season. Thus, he has been moved around quite a bit, and it does not look like he has a future at Old Trafford. Ralf Rangnick has also shown no intentions so far of bringing him back to Manchester, despite the club looking to sign a midfielder.
Thus, it might be a goodbye for the 26-year-old. But John Murtough and co need to ensure that they recoup a reasonable fee for Pereira. We are likely to hold all the cards in a potential transfer negotiation, and the fee received for him can be used for signing some of our winter or summer transfer targets.
A midfielder laced with flair and skills, Pereira can certainly still make a name for himself elsewhere. But for now, it seems like its best we put a stop to his journey as a Red Devil.
