Transfer News: Manchester United ace Charlie Wellens on the radar of AS Roma
According to transfer news on The Sun, AS Roma are interested in signing Manchester United starlet Charlie Wellens.
The Red Devils have produced quite a lot of talents in the past decade, and they are now starting to make it into the first team. However, one player that remains on the fringes of first-team action is 19-year-old, Wellens.
The full-back has impressed with the U-23s this season. He has played for them 14 times this term, and has scored one goal and assisted three others. He has also caught the eye for his impressive range of passing.
Man United have called him up to their Champions League squad this season but he is yet to make his debut and AS Roma are now weighing up a move for him. Former manager, Jose Mourinho had incorporated Wellens into first-team training during his tenure at the club.
He was also interested in bringing him to North London during his time at Tottenham Hotspur, who are still interested in signing the starlet. But Roma are now set to take on Spurs for the signature of the young star. With Inter Milan also in the race, the youngster is not short of options.
Sell or keep?
As things stand, there is little idea of the young full-back’s potential. He could be a world-class talent but he is yet to break into the senior setup and prove himself at the top level. Moreover, there are already several players who can play in his primary role.
Diogo Dalot and Aaron wan-Bissaka are currently competing for the right-back slot under Ralf Rangnick. Ethan Laird and Brandon Williams are likely to do the same once they return from their respective loan stints. It is important to understand that the latter duo is almost the same age as Wellens.
If either of them excels, it further limits the 19-year-old’s prospects of making it at Old Trafford. However, he could always wait around and try to win a spot in the starting line-up. But then, it is far from guaranteed.
Wellens only turned 19 this year, and depending on his development, he is primed to take the next step in his career. Whether he feels confident enough to break through at Old Trafford or make a fresh start elsewhere remains to be seen.

Only time will tell whether the starlet decides to leave Old Trafford or stays put and fights to play for his boyhood club. Making it at a club such as the Red Devils is no easy task but moving away could make life easier for those who cannot meet the standard. Which way the cookie crumbles remains to be seen.
