Transfer News: Newcastle retract interest in Manchester United forward Jesse Lingard after Ralf Rangnick assurance

According to The Northern Echo, Newcastle United have backtracked their interest in Manchester United playmaker Jesse Lingard after assurance from Ralf Rangnick that the England playmaker remains in his plans. He was frustrated with a lack of game time this season and was on his way to leaving Old Trafford before this development.

Lingard has a contract with the Red Devils which will expire at the end of the current campaign. As a result, Newcastle were eyeing him and they could have provided him with regular minutes. That has changed, however, and the 29-year-old has hinted through his representatives that he wants to stay until the summer.

Rangnick has assured the Englishman that he is in his plans moving forward, prompting the player to fight for a spot till the end of the term. The latter is keeping options open for taking an appropriate decision at the right time, meaning he could leave ahead of next season if there is no change in the situation.

A Way Back?

Well, it is still early stages to say for sure as the factors involved are multiple to form an exact opinion. The competition for spots is high, and the England international could still find it challenging to earn regular minutes. He could be used as a number ten in the 4-2-2-2 system that we have seen so far under the former RB Leipzig honcho.

The likes of Cristiano Ronaldo, Edinson Cavani, Marcus Rashford, Mason Greenwood and even rising youngster Anthony Elanga could make genuine claims to earn minutes in the striking department and out wide. Anthony Martial could be on the way out after he expressed through his agent that he wants to leave the Manchester-based club.

The number ten role could offer more chances since Bruno Fernandes, Jadon Sancho, and Donny van de Beek are the only players who would pose a threat. Paul Pogba could also be utilised in that position, but he is currently out injured, and his future is also uncertain. That could facilitate more chances for the United ace in the coming months when fixtures are more congested.

Although, it has been a while since we have seen some promise for Lingard’s career which has resulted in nothing. Even his immense loan spell at West Ham United failed to get him in our starting XI on a regular basis. It just might be that he is unlucky that we have so many good players in similar positions where he plays.

It remains to be seen whether Lingard’s time is up at Theatre of Dreams or not, but he would want to earn minutes to have a chance at being in the England squad for the 2022 Qatar World Cup. Time will tell if keeping him beyond the winter is the right call- if that turns out to be the case and he does stay at Old Trafford, of course.
