Raphael Varane: I need to change myself at Manchester United to make a difference

Raphael Varane picked up yet another injury for Manchester United during the 2-2 draw with Atalanta in the Champions League, which prompted him to change himself for maintaining fitness. He returned from a groin injury that he picked up for France during the international break before suffering the latest setback.

The 28-year-old was signed from Real Madrid this summer for a fee of £34million, which could rise to £42million with add-ons. He has played just nine matches this season, showing how he struggled to get going under the Red Devils shirt. He has two clean sheets and an assist during this period.

Speaking in an interview with the club media (h/t Manchester United official website), Varane talked about the rehabilitation process and accepted that he needs to change to adapt to the Premier League. He vows to do everything to help the team by getting himself to his best as soon as possible.

“Yes, I’m working very hard and, you know, footballers are like F1 [cars] so sometimes we have to change something and to improve the motor. I think I have to change a little thing because it’s a big difference, a big change.”

“The kind of work is different work so I have to adapt. I know that and I’m working very hard to be at my best as quickly as possible. I know it’s big work but I’m ready to do it, to try to improve. I’m very excited to come back to help the team.”

Accepting your shortcomings

It is good to see that the Frenchman has accepted his shortcomings and is striving to do everything to get himself ready to adapt to the league. La Liga and the Premier League aren’t the same. Many players have come over from Spain and found it hard to adjust to the Premier League.

Different players adapt to change in atmosphere differently, as some may instantly adjust to their new surroundings while some may not. The defender has not let himself get down with the issues, but he is trying to better himself for the benefit of the team.

The fans are waiting for him to return since Harry Maguire has struggled this season, and we need a player of his quality to lead us at the back. It also needs to be seen how he would fare for Ralf Rangnick as he goes through the process to make himself ready as soon as possible.

Having a player of his status and calibre at Old Trafford is something that we have waited for a long time. The former Real Madrid man is a serial winner and having him play for a Ralf Rangnick team sounds like a tasty prospect already.
