Edinson Cavani eyes exit from Manchester United amidst interest from Juventus

According to the Italian news outlet Tuttosport (h/t Daily Star), Edinson Cavani is eyeing an exit from Manchester United amidst interest from Juventus for a future transfer. He has struggled to get minutes this season courtesy of injury problems as well as competition for places.

The 34-year-old has just started two Premier League games this season which paints a picture of his current situation. With the summer signing of Cristiano Ronaldo, he lost his starting place and played second fiddle to the Portuguese superstar.

Cavani has also suffered from recurring injuries, which did not help his case in fighting for a place in the team. With the 2022 Qatar World Cup on the horizon, he would need to earn minutes if he hopes to make the Uruguay squad. And that’s not all, as lack of minutes could result in a lack of match sharpness which is not how you want to enter the international tournament.

Edinson Cavani is a lethal striker for Manchester United and Uruguay.

And hence, it isn’t surprising that the former PSG and Palermo striker is looking for an early exit, with Juve keen on getting his services. They are in the market for an experienced striker, and the Red Devils forward fall into that category quite well considering his exploits in Europe with teams like Napoli and Paris Saint-Germain.

A decision to make

With his contract expiring at the end of this season, we might need to make an early decision on the attacker’s future if he does not fall into our plans. Marcus Rashford and Mason Greenwood could also play in that central position, adding to the reason why he can be deemed dispensable.

If we earn a sum for him in the winter transfer window, it would be wise to let him leave rather than lose him on a free next summer. However, there would also be some negatives to losing him mid-season. That is without mentioning the quality he still provides as a centre-forward.

More Manchester United News

The Uruguayan is an able operator even off the ball. Last season, we saw him pressing even when we weren’t in possessions, which is a trait that would be praised by most managers. But given his ageing body, it’s as if we were a few years too late to be able to enjoy the Uruguayan at his physical peak.

Then there is the issue of decline in depth if he leaves in January, which needs addressing through proper signings. Fixtures will come and go at an alarming rate from this month, and losing players would help us keep the entire squad fresh throughout the season. Thus, we need to assess the pros and cons of letting Cavani leave in January. From a fans’ point of view, it wouldn’t be the best idea to compromise on depth so early into Rangnick’s rein if we cannot replace the outgoing senior players with new faces.
