Thiago Silva hits back at Manchester United legend Paul Scholes for ambitious Cristiano Ronaldo claim
Replying on Instagram (h/t The Daily Star), Chelsea veteran Thiago Silva has brushed off suggestions by Manchester United legend Paul Scholes that Cristiano Ronaldo could have been a difference-maker at Stamford Bridge.
The Red Devils ace could only find a place on the bench in the club’s matchup against the Blues in London. While he did come on as a substitute, he was unable to create much as Man United were comfortably the second-best team on the night.
A Jadon Sancho strike followed by David de Gea’s heroic rearguard action ensured the Red Devils left the Bridge with a point. Scholes, however, believes they could have had more if Ronaldo started on the night.
“You’re playing against Thiago Silva, don’t get me wrong, a brilliant centre-half, [but he’s] 37 years of age. It couldn’t be any better for Cristiano, really.”
Scholes went on to add that Ronaldo would have had an easy game against Silva. The comment was brought to the Chelsea ace’s attention and he wasted no time in replying to it.
Rather than fire any shots at Ronaldo, Silva chose to rain down a snarky remark against Scholes instead. He believes it is easy for those who have hung up their boots to speak now that they have no business getting on the field.
“It is always easy. Especially for those who have stopped playing.”
Scholes appears to have a weird fascination regarding Chelsea’s defence and has often played it down. While the Blues are not perfect, it is difficult to say anything against a side who have conceded a mere five goals in 13 Premier League games.
While it is debatable if Ronaldo could have made a difference had he started, Scholes’s comments were uncalled for. It makes him look all the more like a fool given that Ronaldo failed to do anything of note after coming on.

Ronaldo is one of the greatest players in the game’s history and has assured a name for himself in the history books. He has, however, come up short against Liverpool, Manchester City and now Chelsea. Not like he had much service to work with, though.
Unless he starts to make a difference against the top teams soon, there is little Scholes or any other legend can say that will back up their claims.
