Inter Milan are interested in signing Manchester United goalkeeper Dean Henderson
According to Fichajes (h/t Manchester Evening News), Inter Milan are interested in signing 24-year-old Manchester United goalkeeper Dean Henderson. The Serie A club sees him as a suitable long-term replacement for Samir Handanovic.
The Slovenian professional footballer has been an instrumental part of the Nerazzurri till now. He has played 407 matches for the Italian club across all competitions to date. Despite being a dependable asset, Handanovic is 37, and his time at the top level might be numbered.
Henderson could be a great replacement and still has lots of room for growth. His time on loan with Sheffield United has showcased his abilities as a potentially great shot-stopper. He was recalled to Old Trafford but has struggled to nail down the first-choice keeper’s position. The English professional goalkeeper has only made 27 appearances across all competitions for Man United till now.
David de Gea has put in several key performances for the Red Devils this season and there is little reason for Man United to bench him at this point in time. While the club may contemplate giving Henderson another loan move, they would be hesitant to let the player move away from the club permanently.
Even though the Spanish international is proving his worth, Henderson has the ability to become his successor at Old Trafford in the foreseeable future. The English international still has work to be done, but certainly has the potential to take the mantle from the Spaniard.
A risky decision?
He knows the club well and has come through the ranks, proving himself at different levels. With Sergio Romero having left in the summer, even loaning out Henderson would leave Man United short of options in goal. Should de Gea get injured or sidelined, it could create a void in quality between the sticks. Whether there is enough faith that Tom Heaton can step up in such a scenario remains to be seen.
Given how inconsistent our defence has been this season, it is imperative that we have a reliable last line of defence. But then just how happy Henderson will be having to endure more time on the bench remains to be seen.
This will especially be the case given that the FIFA World Cup will be held next year in Qatar. Not garnering enough playtime could harm the 24-year-old’s chances of playing a starring role for England at the showpiece event.
