Manchester United eyeing Barcelona star to replace Paul Pogba

Manchester United keen on replacing Paul Pogba with Barcelona star Frenkie de Jong

According to The Independent (h/t The Metro), Manchester United are eager on replacing Paul Pogba with Barcelona star Frenkie de Jong.

The Red Devils currently possess a host of midfielders, but that could not be the case by next summer. More importantly, Paul Pogba could be set to leave after re-signing for his boyhood club five years ago.

The 28-year-old has dazzled the theatre of dreams in the last half a decade and has also provided seven assists this season.

However, he could be heading for the exit door once his contract expires next summer. The French international is thought to be holding out for an offer that shall make him the highest-paid player in the league, overtaking Cristiano Ronaldo in the process.

But the Old Trafford outfit might not be keen on doing so. They are instead already preparing for life without him and are already looking at replacements. Declan Rice is on the club’s radar after his impressive performances at West Ham over the last two years.

Frenkie de Jong has also been added to that list, as he could become available soon. The Dutch star joined Barcelona in 2019 for a massive £65million fee. He remained a starter under Ernesto Valverde, Quique Setien, and Ronald Koeman.

However, the club recently hired former midfielder Xavi. The Spaniard is apparently not too impressed by the 24-year-old and could offload him as they look to reduce their wage bill.

United are interested in him, but a deal would not be cheap. The former Ajax star still has five years left on his contract, and the La Liga club could demand a high fee

. Moreover, Man City are also interested in recruiting his services.

Thus, the 13-time Premier League champions shall have to fork out a ton of money and beat their city rivals if they hope to land the Dutch international’s signature next summer.
