Gary Neville explains why Antonio Conte will not be the right appointment as Manchester United manager

Speaking on an Instagram Live recently (h/t The Metro), Gary Neville has pinpointed the issues with Antonio Conte and has explained why he will not fit Manchester United if he was to become their manager.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is working on thin ace at Old Trafford after dropping points for a third consecutive week in the Premier League. In fact, fans are apparently now calling out for the club to sign Antonio Conte, who is a free agent currently.

The Italian boss has achieved success in Italy with Juventus and Inter Milan as he took the latter to a Serie A triumph as recently as last season. He has also achieved success in England as he won the league title with Chelsea in 2017 before being sacked a year later.

Despite all of his success, Manchester United legend Gary Neville does not believe that the 52-year-old manager will be a good fit for his old club.

‘Conte won’t be the manager at Manchester United, I don’t think. I don’t think they’ll go for that option, personally. He’s a great manager, but I think certain managers fit certain clubs, and I don’t think Conte fits United personally. As I say, great manager but doesn’t feel right for me that one.’

Neville also refuted claims that hiring Conte will not guarantee United a trophy any time soon, despite the Italian winning Serie A with Inter Milan last season and the Premier League with Chelsea in his first season in London.

‘I’m not into that, giving someone a squad. We tried that with Jose, “Give Jose a squad, and we’ll definitely win the league”. We didn’t, and in the end, it was a mess, and everybody wanted him out.’

The former United right-back also went on to claim that the Red Devils will not sack Solskjaer as he feels they are committed to the project at hand. The club have invested massively and might give some time to the Norwegian before making such a huge decision.

Regardless, there is only so much time one can be given, and the prospect of Conte is one the club might have to consider if the results do not pick up in the near future.
