Jorge Mendes explains why Manchester United star Cristiano Ronaldo should win the Ballon d’Or this year
Speaking to France Football (h/t The Metro), Jorge Mendes has claimed that Manchester United ace Cristiano Ronaldo deserves to win the Ballon d’Or this year.
The 36-year-old has had yet another starry year in world football as he claimed the Golden Boot in Serie A even though Juventus missed out on retaining the league title. However, few knew that this would be the Portuguese international’s last season in Turin.
The former Real Madrid man completed a sensational return to United this summer and has since performed incredibly well under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. Recently, the centre-forward also broke the record of most international goals (109), after scoring twice against the Republic of Ireland in September.
Thus, he was named as one of the nominees for the prestigious Ballon d’Or award –something he has already won five times. The player’s agent, Jorge Mendes, has now explained why his client should win the award this year as well. Mendes told France Football (h/t The Metro):
‘Do not forget that Cristiano was the top scorer in Serie A, he was the top scorer in the last European championships, he has the record for the most goals in the Champions League and is the only player to have won everything in three different and very competitive countries like Italy, Spain, and England.
‘All of this together makes him absolutely unique. From my point of view, the Golden Ball has only one name: Cristiano Ronaldo. He’s never deserved it more than this year.’

Although the Portuguese has broken several records this year, Lionel Messi is the bookmaker’s favourite, while Jorginho and N’Golo are also said to be serious contenders for the award.
Regardless, Ronaldo will continue to knock in the goals for United and if the votes do sway his way, he could bag his sixth Ballon d’Or this year.
