Premier League clubs including Manchester United attempted to stop Newcastle takeover
According to Daily Mail (h/t Express), Manchester United were among four Premier League clubs that tried to stop the Newcastle United takeover this month.
The Magpies have new owners who are willing to provide financial backing to the club in the transfer market. The takeover is financed by ‘Saudi’s £700billion Public Investment Fund’.
A statement by the Premier League officially confirmed the takeover this Thursday. An excerpt read:
“The Premier League, Newcastle United Football Club and St James Holdings Limited have today settled the dispute over the takeover of the club by the consortium of PIF, PCP Capital Partners and RB Sports & Media.”
United feeling threatened?
Those are eye-watering numbers and Newcastle fans can now look forward to their team becoming a force in England once again. And the report states that the Red Devils, Arsenal, Tottenham Hotspur, and Liverpool tried to stop the Saudi’s entry into the Premier League.
That doesn’t really come as a surprise considering these are four of the ‘big 6’ that would be under threat as Newcastle now have the potential to seriously challenge them for trophies.
The Toons were once a force to reckon during the late 90s and early 00s when Alan Shearer wreaked havoc in attack. Times have changed now and capital has assumed as big a role in football as ever before, with teams spending fortunes on transfer fees and wages.

Newcastle’s takeover certainly adds a competitor for a club like Man United inside the transfer market but the Red Devils’ reach, pull, and culture can neither be overtaken nor threatened – at least not in the near future.
