Manchester United star Edinson Cavani to be benched by Uruguay
According to UOL (h/t Mirror), South American giants Uruguay are set to drop Manchester United star Edinson Cavani to the bench for their upcoming World Cup Qualifier against Colombia.
This new setback comes on the heels of the veteran striker speaking out about his lack of playing time at Old Trafford. One of the club’s best players from last season, Cavani has been sidelined since Cristiano Ronaldo’s arrival earlier this summer.
The 34-year-old received his first start of the season last week against Everton. He was, however, withdrawn in the second half for Ronaldo as Untied sought a winner.
Cavani has played just 119 minutes of football this season for United, stretching over four games. He is yet to find the net or make a single assist. Any hope he had of garnering more minutes for his country appears to have gone up in smoke.
According to the report, Cavani trained with the reserves ahead of La Celeste’s home match against the Colombians and looks set for a place on the bench.
The match against Colombia is just the first of a triple-header that will also see Uruguay face Argentina on the 10th before facing Brazil four days later. Neither game will be easy and should test La Celeste’s ability to the extreme.
Uruguay are currently third in the table and are some way off Brazil and Argentina who are ahead of them. It can be argued that Cavani could be rested ahead of the upcoming clashes.
One of his nation’s greatest ever forwards, it is unfathomable to imagine him being relegated to the bench. Cavani initially made a name for himself at United off the bench last season. Whether he will do the same for Uruguay too remains to be seen.
