Gary Lineker reveals how Ed Woodward signed Cristiano Ronaldo for Manchester United in his garden

Speaking on BBC Sounds (h/t Twitter/ @BBCMOTD), Gary Lineker has revealed how Ed Woodward signed Cristiano Ronaldo for Manchester United in his garden.

The Portuguese superstar completed a sensational return to Manchester United on deadline day as he made the move from Juventus. Although people were unsure of the next move the 36-year-old was going to make, the Red Devils were always keen on making it a homecoming for their former Ballon d’Or winning winger.

Ronaldo has always had a special connection with the United fans, especially due to his scintillating performances for the club after signing for them initially in 2003. The 36-year-old was just a teenager back then, but his silky moves and desire to do well under Sir Alex Ferguson made him an instant fan favourite.

Moreover, the Portuguese’s athleticism and commitment to play every single game was also another factor that could have convinced the Old Trafford outfit to complete a deal for him again.

While they were rumours regarding a move to rivals Manchester City, United swooped in and signed one of their very own superstars again. However, a funny incident from this negotiation was revealed recently by former England international Gary Lineker.

Linker, who is now a BBC Sport Pundit, revealed to both Alan Shearer and Micah Richards that United CEO Ed Woodward is his next-door neighbour, and the deal to sign Ronaldo was done on his garden. Lineker told BBCMOTD:

“Ed Woodward signed Ronaldo when he was in my garden!”

Signing the 5-time UEFA Champions League winner is glorious enough in itself, but it is surely a nice moment when it is done in your own backyard.

The 36-year-old has now scored 5 goals in as many starts for the club as he looks to bring back the Premier League title to Old Trafford.
