Ole Gunnar Solskjaer backs Jadon Sancho to come good after Gareth Southgate questioned his recent performances
Speaking in a pre-match interview before Manchester United took on Everton (h/t ESPN), Ole Gunnar Solskjaer remarked that Gareth Southgate is mistaken in his recent assessment of Jadon Sancho.
The Three Lions manager has named the 21-year-old winger his squad for the World Cup qualifiers in October against Hungary and Andorra. However, he mentioned in a recent interview that Sancho may not have deserved the call-up based on his recent performances.
The England international is yet to score for the Red Devils since signing for them this summer and has often looked below par with his performances. But Solskjaer was never going to let one of his players be criticized in such a manner.
The Norwegian manager asked the reporters if the interview with Southgate was done before Wednesday night. That was, of course, the night when Man United beat Villarreal 2-1 in the UEFA Champions League.
Ole calls out Southgate
“Was that interview done before Wednesday night? Jadon was exceptional, he was electric, the crowd loved him. I think he felt that connection with the crowd, and that is what we want from him, to be direct, positive, go past players numerous times.”
Southgate’s comments on the former Borussia Dortmund player weren’t all critical. And Solskjaer was quick to address the bit where the England manager reaffirmed his belief and trust in the youngster.
“Gareth has also said it’s important Jadon knows they believe in him. They have invested time in him. He will be a top player. Performances are going to come. He’ll come good, we’ve got absolutely no worries. If he goes there I’m sure he will play well.”
