William Gallas believes Manchester United ace Raphael Varane is incomparable to Arsenal’s Ben White
Speaking in an interview with GentingBet (h/t Manchester Evening News), William Gallas has hailed Manchester United star Raphael Varane and believes he is incomparable to Arsenal defender Ben White.
English rivals Arsenal and Manchester United both invested heavily in the market this summer while both clubs also brought in new centre-backs. The Red Devils procured the services of 4-time Champions League winner Raphael Varane from Real Madrid for £34million while the Gunners went a different way.
The Emirates outfit shelled out close to £50million for Ben White to sign him from Brighton & Hove Albion. Although the English defender is five years younger than Varane, William Gallas believes there is no comparison between the two signings.
The former Premier League defender explained his reasons in an interview with GentingBet (h/t Manchester Evening News).
“It’s difficult for me to understand why Arsenal spent £50million on a player who is yet to prove himself at the top level, and at the same time Manchester United can spend around £40million on Varane.
“Varane is a different class player compared to Ben White. Ben White is still young. As I said, he hasn’t proved anything yet. I respect him. I don’t know him. I respect him and I hope he will be the great player, but he hasn’t proved anything yet. You can’t compare Ben White and Varane, I’m sorry.”

Although the Arsenal centre-back had a stuttering start to the season, he is slowly regaining some of his old form now. Varane, on the other hand, has been a vital part of Solskjaer’s side that is currently sitting joint top of the league table.
Thus, while the two defenders commanded contrasting transfer fees, it remains to be seen what kind of debut seasons they have at their respective clubs.
