Manchester United star Luke Shaw calls on UEFA to ban artificial surfaces
According to TNT Sports (h/t Manchester Evening News), Manchester United star, Luke Shaw has called on UEFA to ban artificial pitches in matches.
The Red Devils star’s comments come following United’s shock defeat to Young Boys at the Stade de Suisse on Tuesday night. The stoppage-time winner from Jordan Siebatcheu ensured the English giants returned home with nothing to show for their efforts.
While Shaw does not blame the pitch for the poor performance on the night, he admitted that the surface was certainly a contributing factor.
“No excuses, we lost the game tonight, you can’t blame the pitch.”
He goes on to add that a competition such as the UEFA Champions League should do away with the pitches. Shaw believes the surface makes it hard to turn on and could prove to be dangerous for players.
“But for Champions League, these pitches, they shouldn’t be possible. It’s dangerous. It’s hard to turn on.”
Despite taking an early lead, United saw themselves on the backfoot when Aaron Wan-Bissaka got sent off in the first half. Shaw added that the one-man deficit did tip the odds against the Red Devils.
“I don’t know. It’s always hard with 10 men. I think we started well. It’s a hard pitch to play on, it’s not easy to get used to.”
The Red Devils still have five games to salvage their participation in the competition. The other two clubs in the group are Villarreal and Atalanta. If the loss against Young Boys has shown anything, it is that there are no free dinners at Europe’s top table.

United return to the Premier League this weekend as they travel to London to face West Ham United. The Hammers will then make the trip to Old Trafford midweek for the Carabao Cup tie. Hopefully, we can put the midweek tragedy behind us and return to winning ways.
