The Englishman, however, still has a lot of money tied up in his assets. Owen is currently the owner of the Manor House Stables, which is a 160-acre thoroughbred horse-racing training establishment located in Cheshire. Apart from this, he owns the ‘Michael Owen management company’, which focuses on young players and managing their careers. Owen is also a BT Sport Pundit since 2014.

Michael Owen Club Career

Owen started his youth career at Liverpool at age 12, when he was eligible to sign a schoolboy contract. He soon moved up the ranks at the Anfield outfit and became a hero in the Youth League.

The player was awarded his first professional contract at age 17 by Roy Evans, who was confident that he can perform at the highest stage. And that move paid dividends instantly as the youngster scored on his debut against Wimbledon. However, they could not win the game, which led to them narrowly conceding the Premier League title to rivals Manchester United.

Owen was the first-choice striker at the club in the following season and won the Premier League Golden Boot as well as the PFA Young Player of the Year award. The Englishman soon became one of the best forwards in the Premier League at the time and led Liverpool’s title charge again that year, but the team failed to maintain consistency. However, Owen retained his Premier League Golden Boot that year and finished as the runner-up to Zinedine Zidane in the World Player of the Year award.

In 2001, the Englishman hit new heights as he became only the fourth Englishman to win the European Footballer of the Year award. The 21-year-old had helped Liverpool to a treble – the League Cup, FA Cup & the UEFA Cup. In the following season, Owen also helped the club win the UEFA Super Cup.

After two more strong seasons, Owen caught the eye of Florentino Perez at Real Madrid, who signed the player eventually in 2004 for £8million. The Englishman was given the famous number 11 jersey and played amongst the ‘Galacticos’ i.e., David Beckham, Raul, Zidane, Roberto Carlos, Luis Figo, and several others. However, Owen had a failed career at the club and had to settle for a place on the bench on most occasions.

In 2005, Owen eventually left Madrid to come back to England, as he joined Newcastle United for £16.8million. 20,000 fans were present at the player’s unveiling in St. James’ Parks. However, injuries completely ruined Owen’s career at the club as he managed only 79 appearances in his four-year stint.

Later, in one of the most controversial moves in the history of the league, Owen joined his boyhood club Liverpool’s arch-rivals Manchester United. The Englishman was brought in as a direct replacement to Cristiano Ronaldo and was given the famous No. 7 jersey. However, Owen could not justify the belief put in him by Sir Alex Ferguson as he featured rarely for the club and was also an unused substitute in the club’s UEFA Champions League final loss against Barcelona. However, Owen won his maiden Premier League title in 2011.

He left United in 2012 after he managed only 52 appearances in his three years with the club. Owen joined Stoke City in 2012 but played as a squad player and appeared only nine times for the Potters. He eventually announced his retirement at the end of that season.

Michael Owen International Career

Owen first began his career with England at the 1998 World Cup as an 18-year-old, becoming the nation’s youngest player at the World Cup. He also became the youngest goal-scorer in that tournament when he scored against Romania. However, England failed miserably in the competition that year.

The 2000 UEFA Euros saw Owen get selected for the Three Lions, but only scored once in the three group stage matches, and the team did not make it past that round. In 2002, Owen took over the mantle of spearheading England’s strike force, but the Englishman only scored twice in the tournament as the Three Lions lost to Brazil in the quarter-final.

The 2004 Euros & 2006 World Cup followed a similar pattern where Owen failed to produce for the nation on the big stage. He eventually retired from international football in 2008, but the Englishman will always be known for his performances in the qualifying games, while he also the sixth-highest goal-scorer in the country’s history (40).
