Team News: Manchester United could be set to face Newcastle United this weekend without six first-team stars

According to Tyneside based news outlet, Newcastle Chronicle (h/t Daily Star), Manchester United could be without six players against Newcastle United this weekend at Old Trafford.

The Red Devils have taken seven points from their first three games and are keeping pace with the teams at the top of the table. Another win against the Magpies will set them up nicely prior to opening their UEFA Champions League campaign next week.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side could take on Steve Bruce’s Magpies without six senior players. The likes of Alex Telles, Dean Henderson, Scott McTominay, Marcus Rashford and Phil Jones are all likely to be unavailable for the clash.

Dean Henderson is yet to feature for Manchester United this season.

Another player who is facing a race against time to feature on the night is Jadon Sancho. The 21-year-old withdrew from the England squad after picking up a minor injury.

Whether he will recover in time for the clash at the weekend remains to be seen. Despite the absentees, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has Edinson Cavani back available while Mason Greenwood is going through a purple patch of form.

The biggest talking point, however, will be the potential return of Cristiano Ronaldo. The 36-year-old trained with the club earlier today and it remains to be seen if he will feature against the Magpies.

Henderson’s absence is thanks to testing positive for Covid-19 while the others are recovering from injuries or surgeries. Despite the absences, Solskjaer has enough options available to overcome a rather average Newcastle side. Anything less than three points should be considered unacceptable.

The Red Devils won the corresponding game 3-1 last season. Goals from Marcus Rashford, Daniel James and Bruno Fernandes sealed the deal on the night. Of the three just one is expected to take to the field this Saturday.
