Raphael Varane completes Manchester United medical and can feature against Leeds
According to The Athletic (Subscription Required) [h/t Metro], Raphael Varane has completed his medical at Carrington and is all set to be announced as a Manchester United player, possibly before the game against Leeds United this weekend.
The deal between United and Real Madrid was agreed upon a little over two weeks ago. But quarantine rules, travel plans, and paperwork has kept the Red Devils fans waiting eagerly for their third signing of the summer.
The report adds that while the player is likely to be announced before the weekend, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is yet to assess the 28-year-old star’s fitness levels. And that means rather than starting straight away, Varane could be on the bench against Leeds on 14th August.
That is something that the fanbase would not be complaining about. It is unlikely for any new signing to make the starting XI within 48 hours of them being announced as a new signing, and even being on the bench gives him a chance to feature for some time against United’s rivals.
Varane to feature in PL opener?
The Red Devils agreed on a €50million fee for Varane earlier this summer. Apart from him, the club has already added Tom Heaton and Jadon Sancho, to their squad.
Varane’s addition could be vital for the Norwegian manager going into the new season. He has the experience and the quality to become Harry Maguire’s perennial partner in defence.
The former Leicester City centre-back impressed for United last season and was equally solid for England at the 2020 UEFA Euros. But at times, fans could feel that United can upgrade on his partner in defence.

That is something that United would have thought too, because a player of Varane’s status commanding a stellar transfer fee would not arrive to just warm the benches at Old Trafford.
