Manchester United receive blow in Leon Goretzka pursuit

According to a tweet by reliable journalist Tobi Altschäffl, Leon Goretzka and Bayern Munich have reopened talks over a new deal amidst links with Manchester United. An excerpt from the tweet reads:

“The talks with Goretzka were resumed and went very well: a quick agreement with the midfielder is now possible. ManUnited is still very interested in a Goretzka-Deal.”.

This would be a blow to Manchester United who have been keen on signing the German, while they had also contacted the player earlier this summer over a potential move next year on a free transfer. However, the interest would have intensified only if Goretzka failed to agree on a deal with Bayern Munich.

As per Sport Bild (h/t Daily Mail), Manchester United had also tabled a concrete offer for the player to come to Old Trafford when he becomes a free agent next June.

Manchester United have been keen on signing a central midfielder after Paul Pogba refused a contract extension at the club. And with the player having only a year left on his deal, signing a replacement would be a clever move by the Red Devils.

The German has scored 25 goals in 112 matches during his three seasons at Bayern Munich, while he has also won three Bundesliga trophies, two German Cups, and the Champions League trophy in 2020. Moreover, he was a member of the German squad that reached the Round of 16 at the Euros where they eventually bowed out to England.
