Transfer News: AC Milan return in ‘no doubt’ for Manchester United defender Diogo Dalot

According to Italian outlet La Gazzetta dello Sport via MilanNews (h/t Yardbarker), Manchester United defender, Diogo Dalot, has only one destination this summer amid transfer links to AC Milan.

The report claims that the Portuguese defender’s future is in ‘no doubt’ and that he will return to I Rossoneri. Dalot was, of course, at the Serie A side on loan last season and made a good impression during his spell.

It adds that Stefano Pioli wants someone to compete with David Calabria on the right-hand side of his defence. And Dalot, in that regard, ‘has always been the first choice’ for the Italian side. (h/t Yardbarker)

He made 33 appearances in all competitions for them, including 10 matches in Europe. Such figures would have probably not been possible at Old Trafford had he stayed for last season.

Milan want Dalot

The 22-year-old joined the Red Devils from FC Porto all the way back in 2018. But in the three seasons since then, he has only managed to start in 13 Premier League games.

He is still at a formative age in his career, and having the versatility to play on both flanks of the defence makes him a useful asset for any team. But first-team chances could be hard to come by for him at Manchester United.

That is due to the fact that the club already houses two top quality full-backs in Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Luke Shaw. The English duo has established itself as the club’s go-to full-back pairing under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

And with Shaw and Wan-Bissaka both still in the prime years of their career, it is unlikely to see Dalot displacing them in the United hierarchy. For him, a move to Milan makes more sense than warming the bench at United.
