Transfer News: Luke Shaw in line to receive new Manchester United contract

According to The Daily Mail, Manchester United are well on course to offer Luke Shaw a new contract ‘in the coming months’ after an impressive year for club and country.

The English left-back is seen as a vital part of the club’s ambitions to win their first Premier League title since Sir Alex Ferguson left. Shaw also earned praise for his showing at Euro 2020 with the Three Lions.

He was a regular fixture in Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s team last season despite the acquisition of Alex Telles from FC Porto. It seems that he has responded well to the competition posed by the Brazilian, which comes as great news for the club.

Shaw, along with Harry Maguire and PSG transfer target Paul Pogba, is due to return to training this week with the club. The players are to undergo some medical scans for Covid-19 on Sunday before they set off for Scotland. (h/t The Daily Mail)

Shaw to get a new deal

The report adds that Shaw is set to be ‘rewarded’ for his showings and will receive a new deal as his current contract expires in the summer of 2023. This would be a smart move by the club in the long run.

Tying down important players to long-term contracts can avoid considerable headaches for the club in the short term at least, and Solskjaer’s focus can then remain on winning his first bit of silverware at the club.

Shaw’s performances in the past year for United earned him a regular place in England’s squad yet again. And speaking to the official club media in March this year, he credited the former Cardiff City manager for his rise.

“He takes the pressure off the lads and takes it all himself. Sometimes it is not fair because we are the ones on the pitch and we need to take our fair share too. For me, especially, from what I had before Ole came in, it is a total difference. It has pushed me to a new level.”
