Man United ready to sell four defenders to fund a move for another centre-back

Transfer News: Manchester United ready to sell four defenders this summer

According to Manchester Evening News (h/t Express), Manchester United are ready to sell four defenders in the summer transfer window. The Red Devils have already added one to their ranks as Raphael Varane looks set to become a Red Devil.

It has been a problematic area of the team for Ole Gunnar Solskajer over the last two seasons. While signing Harry Maguire helped address it to an instant, the lack of a reliable defender alongside him was apparent. Hopefully, Varane can be that man in the seasons to come.

United, however, are not satisfied and could add yet another defender to their roster. Doing so would be a good move and will offer us strength in depth for what could be a long and gruelling season.

According to the report, the likes of Pau Torres and Jules Kounde are on the club’s radar. It would appear that La Liga is our go-to league for defensive reinforcements this summer.

While bringing in players is well and good, it could prove detrimental to some of the fringe players already at the club. United now look set to part ways with four of them in the coming weeks. Those in the firing line include Axel Tuanzebe, Phil Jones, Teden Mengi and Eric Bailly.

Tuanzebe is keen to play regularly and will it difficult to do so at United. Newcastle United are interested in him and a move away, even if it is on loan, would be a welcome decision. The same can be said of Mengi, who should be aiming for regular playtime even if it is in a lower league.

Jones and Bailly could both be on their way out

Varane’s imminent arrival will push Bailly further down the pecking order. He will soon be the fifth choice central defender and could struggle for minutes in the upcoming season. The Ivorian recently signed a new contract and United could receive a decent sum for him should they decide to cash in this summer.

Jones, meanwhile, has overstayed his welcome and should have left the club years ago. The Englishman failed to make a single appearance last season and any amount he can fetch this summer is a welcome sight.
