Transfer News: Manchester United being ‘clever’ in their pursuit of Leon Goretzka
According to transfer news from Express, Manchester United are trying to be clever in their pursuit of Leon Goretzka. The German midfielder is being eyed by United as a potential replacement to Paul Pogba who could be leaving the club. United are hoping to capitalize on Goretzka’s wage demands and sign him.
With Pogba’s future up in the air, United would want to keep replacements in hand. Losing a world-class option like him means that another similar option will need to be brought in. United will need someone to ease the burden on Bruno Fernandes in some way or the other.
Leon Goretzka is a name that United are keeping tabs on in the event Pogba chooses to leave the club. The stocky midfielder is one of the best in his position in the Bundesliga for Bayern Munich as well as for the German national side. Bayern are facing a similar situation to what United are facing with Pogba.
United are directly approaching Goretzka’s representatives
Bundesliga expert Jan Aage Fjortoft explained the situation where United are trying to be clever in their pursuit of the midfielder.
“Now Kimmich’s contract is up in 2023, Goretzka’s contract is up in 2022. Goretzka is saying ‘I want the same money, I want around €20m’ and then you have the problem because that structure is so easy to keep and Bayern will say ‘Goretzka and Kimmich, you are the players for the future, you are the guys we’re going to build the new generation after the old ones’ that I mentioned.
“Manchester United are being clever of course. They’re going to Team Goretzka and saying ‘listen, if you have any problem, we can pay you more’. So this is a big challenge for Bayern. They could end up losing two of their most vital and best players. Both Kimmich and Goretzka want to stay at Bayern but the big money sometimes decides where a player goes.”

Mancheste United are definitely being shrewd here, directly going after Goretzka’s camp. Provided Pogba leaves, the Red Devils should try to push for Goretzka as he is reaching his prime years, which would help in replacing the Frenchman.
