Transfer News: Manchester United weighing up a move for Liverpool target Saul Niguez
A report by Daily Mail states that Manchester United are considering a transfer move for Atletico Madrid star Saul Niguez, and that there is ‘now a belief’ they could land him for a fee of around £45million.
Saul, who is believed to have a £128million release clause, has also been linked with Premier League rivals, Liverpool. However, the Reds are ‘unlikely‘ to buy him unless they sell another midfielder.
That logically puts United in a strong position to land Saul ahead of the Merseysiders. Saul was also offered to Juventus and Barcelona but his wage demands became a problem in both instances. (h/t The Daily Mail)
Saul, who is contracted at the Wanda Metropolitano until 2026, is not the only Los Colchoneros star that United have been linked with this summer.
United consider Saul
The Red Devils have shown an interest in right-back Kieran Trippier. However, the report clarifies that any move for Saul is likely to be mutually exclusive to the one for Trippier.
A deal for the 26-year-old Spain international could benefit United, even more so when PSG’s readiness to bid for Paul Pogba and Nemanja Matic’s uncertain future at Old Trafford are considered. (h/t The Daily Mail)
Saul is certainly a quality player who has won several accolades in Spain’s capital city. However, Pogba is undoubtedly the club’s main man in midfield ever since he was signed by Jose Mourinho in 2016.
Matic, who turns 33 next weekend, is perhaps more expendable in that regard. But if either of the two leaves Old Trafford this summer, a move for Saul may seem necessary.

United do have Donny van de Beek on their bench ready for first-team starts on a regular basis. But Saul’s experience and versatility make him an exciting prospect for any club, let alone United.
