Thibaut Courtois takes savage dig at Manchester United forward Anthony Martial

According to Mirror, Thibaut Courtois took a rather savage dig at Manchester United star Anthony Martial. On being asked about the prominent players to have missed out on the Euros, Courtois’ teammate Jan Vertonghen included Martial’s name. The Real Madrid keeper seemed to be surprised and questioned Vertonghen’s judgement of labelling Martial as a star player.

The Frenchman came into the 2020/21 season riding high on the wave of a spectacular 2019/20 season. He ended the season as United’s top scorer and was also voted the Manchester United Players’ Player of the Year.

It has, however, proven to be a frustrating campaign for Martial, who scored just seven goals all season. An injury sustained while on international duty in March ended his season prematurely and denied him a spot in France’s squad for the Euros.

Martial was also dropped for the French squad for the Euros

Former Premier League stars Jan Vertonghen and Thibaut Courtois had a chat about their recently concluded Euro 2020 campaign. When Vertongehen asked Courtois about the star players to have missed out on the Euros, he replied with only Sergio Ramos.

Hence, Vertonghen went on to name the likes of Erling Haaland, Virgil van Dijk, Marc-Andre ter Stegen, Moise Kean, Miralem Pjanic, Anthony Martial and a few other names. Clearly, Courtois was taken aback that Martial’s name was there (h/t Mirror).

The Belgian duo then laughed at that, adding insult to injury. It’s not entirely without reason that Martial has been ridiculed like that. He has only had one or two good seasons for United since arriving. While Solskjaer has always supported Martial, his form over the last season makes it hard to justify that.
