Gabriel Marcotti plays down Manchester United interest in Leon Goretzka
Speaking on ESPN FC (h/t Sports Review), football pundit Gabriel Marcotti has admitted that the chances of Leon Goretzka moving to Manchester United this summer appear dim.
The German international is a key part of Bayern Munich’s side. With his contract set to expire next year, his future has been called into question. Just 26, Goretzka has his best years ahead of him and would be a handy addition to any team across Europe.
According to Bild via Sport Witness (h/t Mirror), Manchester United have made contact with the agent regarding a summer switch. Marcotti has however played down the chances of that happening.
He goes on to add that drumming up United’s interest could just be a ploy to get Bayern to extend his contract. Ole Gunnar Solskajer is keen to strengthen his midfield and is readying to potentially replace Paul Pogba. The Frenchman, too, is in the final year of his contract and United have a decision to make this summer
“He’s part of the army of players who will be out of contract in 2022. He needs to extend his deal.”
Marcotti also believes that it makes little sense for Bayern to let go of Goretzka. Goretzka made three appearances for Germany at Euro 2020 before they were dumped out of the tournament by England in the last 16.
“It would be mad for Bayern Munich to let him go. It would make no sense.”
Speaking on the Here We Go podcast (h/t Sports Review), journalist Fabrizio Romano confirmed earlier that United’s priority is to extend Pogba’s interest.
With the Frenchman’s representatives now pushing for a move to Paris Saint-Germain, it remains to be seen if the Red Devils will change gears and focus on the German. Rennes midfielder Eduardo Camavinga is also linked to United.

The player, for his part, loves being at Bayern Munich and would prefer to stay if given the option. That has, however, not impacted his decision to move on should an agreement fail to be reached.
