A parting of the ways could be on the cards

Fernando Santos open to recalling Manchester United star Bruno Fernandes against Belgium

According to Manchester Evening News, Portugal boss Fernando Santos has left the door open for Manchester United star Bruno Fernandes to return to the starting line-up against Belgium.

The defending champions finished third in their group behind France and Germany. It is fair to say that they will need to up their game considerably if they are serious about defending the title.

Fernandes for all his talk has failed to deliver in the Euros so far. He was in fact benched for Portugal’s massive clash against France, only making a brief cameo towards the end. It is perhaps telling that his biggest talking moment involved him getting away with a late foul against Kingsley Coman.

“We may change some players. Last match, we changed some things but because we felt that thinking of the opponent, but not just that, and about ourselves.”

Santos hinted that the changes he made against France was influenced by fatigue. It isn’t off the mark given the exhausting season that Fernandes has had with United. Now that he has been given a breather, it remains to be seen if he will be restored to the starting XI.

“I wanted to bring in new blood to the midfield section. Tomorrow, I don’t think that will be an issue because we have had plenty of rest over the past four days.”

Fernandes was our best player last season

We personally hope Fernandes starts on the bench so that he can get more rest. United need him ready and raring to go next season and a summer of rest will do him good. Also, with Renato Sanches impressing against France, the youngster could make a major case for himself to start ahead of Fernandes.
