Manchester United remain interested in French star Ousmane Dembele

According to Mundo Deportivo (h/t Sport Witness), Manchester United could return for Barcelona star Ousmane Dembele this summer.

The French winger is currently set for an interesting summer at the Nou Camp. Dembele’s contract at Barcelona expires in 2022 and so far there has been no clarity on where his future lies. The Catalan giants are worried that the player and his entourage could be gearing to leave on a free next year.

Such a scenario would be hard to digest given the mammoth £97m they paid for him back in 2017. While he has had his moments, they have been few and far betwee. Losing him now on a free would be the final straw.

Dembele is still on United’s radar

Barcelona have made several renewal attempts, staying in touch with the player’s entourage over the telephone and via email. There however appears to be an element of distrust between both parties.

Dembele hasn’t shown a great deal of interest in a transfer up to this point either. After all, according to the report, he turned down a loan switch to Old Trafford last summer. A year on, the Red Devils still appear to be interested.

While United are said to be readying a move, the news should be taken with a pinch of salt. After all, the report a potential bid to be of hope than expectation.

Mission Sancho

Injuries were a major source of Dembele’s frustrations at Barcelona. He enjoyed better fortune last season, making 44 appearances, scoring 11 goals and making five assists. Despite emerging as a key member of Ronald Koeman’s plans, his future remains a source of major concern.

United are keen to reinforce their right-wing and are eyeing Jadon Sancho as their priority this summer. With a deal for the Englishman close, there is no need for us to also go in for Dembele.

Manchester United manager, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has told the club to solely focus on securing Jadon Sancho rather than also monitor his alternatives.

At 24, Dembele will be an excellent signing and is of the right profile age-wise and ability-wise. However, it remains to be seen if we will move for him unless the deal for Sancho falls apart.
