Manchester United skipper Harry Maguire declares himself fit to play Scotland
According to The Guardian, Manchester United skipper Harry Maguire has declared himself fit to face Scotland at the Euros this week.
The Three Lions got off to an excellent start by winning their tournament opener against Croatia last Sunday. They will now look to make it two wins on the trot by defeating the old enemy tomorrow.
One man who missed the first game was Maguire, who is still nursing an injury he sustained against Aston Villa last month. He has not played since but has now made himself available for Gareth Southgate’s side.
“I feel good.”
According to the report, the Red Devils skipper had previously targeted the final group game against the Czech Republic next Tuesday for his comeback. His return gives Southgate more hope as he plots to go all the way in the tournament.
Having returned to training with the England squad last Thursday, Maguire has pushed on quicker than expected. The onus is now on Southgate to make a decision ahead of the game. The player however admits that he feels good and is raring to go.
“I’m back available, I’ve been training and I’m looking forward to it. I’ve done a few sessions now and I feel like my fitness is there.”
Slow and steady wins the race
Maguire however has ruled out the chances of him starting the game against Scotland. Whether he comes on late on as a substitute remains to be seen. Bringing him off the bench is the best foot forward given his lack of match fitness. Thrusting him straight into a match with minimal preparation could prove detrimental to both the player and the team.
“I’m here as a player but also as a fan so I fully understand my position in the camp. Whatever happens I want England to win – that’s my main focus.”
England will have bigger fish to fry in the coming rounds. They will need their best defender in top shape as they chase their first major honour since 1966.

While the Three Lions boss can call upon the likes of John Stones, Tyrone Mings, Conor Coady and Ben White, none of them can hold a candle to Maguire’s ability or leadership skills. His imminent return is a massive boost for the team.
