Liverpool ready £43m offer for Manchester United target Cristian Romero

According to Spanish outlet AS (h/t The Express), Liverpool are looking to beat Manchester United to the signing of Argentine international Cristian Romero.

The Argentine international has been excellent for Atalanta in a season where they finished third in Serie A. Romero made 42 appearances for the Italians across all competitions, scoring three goals and five assists. A fair contribution for a defender. (h/t Transfermarkt)

Romero is technically a Juventus player on loan at Atalanta. The Bergamo club is however expected to take the option to make the deal permanent this summer.

While United are keen on the player, they could be trumped to the 23-year-old by arch-rivals Liverpool. The Merseysiders are coming off a season that saw them negotiate a freak injury crisis at the back.

The Reds appear to be keen not to repeat that in the future and are eyeing a £43million bid for Romero. Jurgen Klopp’s side have already signed Ibrahima Konate and landing Romero will give their backline great strength in depth.

One advantage United have is the number of centre-backs on Liverpool’s roster. Fitness permitting, Klopp can call upon the likes of Virgil van Dijk, Joe Gomez, Joel Matip, Nathaniel Phillips, Rhys Williams and Ben Davies. With Konate set to be added to that list, it is debatable if the Merseysiders will push for Romero unless they rid themselves of a few defenders.

At 23, Romero has the best years ahead of him and will only get better with age. Moreover, he also looks like a cheaper option than the likes of Jules Kounde and Raphael Varane, who are also on the Red Devils’ radar.

Romero is also a full international with Argentina and has so far won two caps. He opened the scoring in the 2-2 draw against Colombia last week.
