Juan Mata must take a pay cut in order to stay at Manchester United
According to The Daily Star, Juan Mata will need to take a massive pay cut in order to stay on at Manchester United beyond this summer.
The 33-year-old’s contract runs out at the end of the month. He was not among the list of players released and has now been offered a one-year deal.
The Spaniard will need to take a massive wage cut of £70,000-a-week to earn £100,000-a-week. Whether Mata is willing to accept the new terms remains to be seen.
Mata is under no compulsion to accept United’s offer. After all, being available on a free could endear him to the likes of Valencia and Barcelona. It is entirely possible that both clubs could offer him a better package than United.
The Spaniard is however keen to stay put and also has the blessings of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer to do so. While he may not have featured heavily for us in the last two seasons, he is an experienced head who offers much in reserve.
United could seek to tempt the player into signing by offering him incentives in the form of add-ons and other bonuses based on appearances. That would help bridge the difference between his current and future wage package.
It has been an emotional year for the Spaniard, who lost his mother Marta Garcia. The Spaniard celebrated his goal against Wolves on the last day of the Premier League season by dedicating it to her,
Mata came on as a late substitute for United in the Europa League final against Villarreal. The fact that Solskjaer brought him on for the penalty shootout shows the faith he holds in the Spaniard.
