Jose Mourinho full of praise for Manchester United star Dean Henderson
Speaking on TalkSport (h/t The Daily Mail), AS Roma boss Jose Mourinho has praised Dean Henderson for the development he has shown at Manchester United.
The 24-year-old is coming off a season that saw him both perform and disappoint for United in equal measure. He is now currently with the England squad at this summer’s Euros.
Henderson now has his eyes set on David de Gea’s starting spot ahead of the 2021/22 season. Although he appeared to have displaced the Spaniard earlier this year, De Gea returned to the line-up for the Europa League final.
Mourinho is well aware of Henderson’s abilities having managed United for a little over two years. He recounted a memory of the player’s bold claim that he would wrestle the starting spot from De Gea.
“I am a Henderson fan.”
Henderson’s tall objective surprised Mourinho and his coaches. However, the player did justice to his target and returned from Sheffield United last summer a much-improved player. While it is debatable if he is the undisputed number one, he has shown undoubted progress.
“I think United did amazing for him and he did amazing for himself.”
Moutinho also backed Henderson to start over Jordan Pickford for England at the Euros. He believes the United ace has the personality traits needed to become the first choice shot-stopper.
“I think he has this arrogance, this trust, this belief that a goalkeeper needs.”
Henderson has so far made 26 first-team appearances for United, keeping 13 clean sheets. (h/t Transfermarkt)
