Manchester United show interest in Aston Villa star John McGinn
According to The Athletic (Subscription Required), Manchester United are showing interest in Aston Villa’s 26-year-old midfielder John McGinn.
The 26-year-old has been an excellent player for the Villans. He made 37 Premier League appearances, scoring thrice and assisting six more. He was one of their key performers and played a big role in their 11th-place finish this season.
A central midfielder who can also play on the left, McGinn is a part of the Scotland side to take part in this summer’s Euros. United fans could get a glimpse of him when they take on England on June 18.
To be fair, McGinn is a surprise choice given the quality that United demand. In fact he does not feature anywhere at the top of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s wishlist. United’s technical director Darren Fletcher is a huge fan of the Villa star and is keen to bring him to Old Trafford.
The midfielder has four years to go on his current deal at Villa Park. Given his importance to the team and the strong negotiation position Villa are in, United will need to fork the cash to land their man.
While it would be fair for one to assume he will cost lesser than Jack Grealish, there is a world of difference in the quality that both players offer. United are better off saving the money for an all-out go at landing the Villa skipper over McGinn.
It is perhaps telling that McGinn does not feature high on Solskjaer’s wish list. As long as he is the manager in charge, United are better off securing the players he is keen on to implement his vision of football.

If United do keep hold of all their players this summer, they will have enough strength in midfield. Signing McGinn is unlikely to give us the boost in quality we seek and the club is better off looking elsewhere.
