Transfer News: Saul wants to leave Atletico Madrid as Manchester United retain their interest

According to a report by Spanish outlet Mundo Deportivo (h/t The Express), Manchester United have ‘always dreamed’ of signing Atletico Madrid star, Saul Niguez.

The Spanish midfielder is linked with a move to United as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer looks to strengthen his midfielder. Saul has not started a number of games this season which has led to him wanting a move away from Atletico.

According to the report, the fact that he has started just 22 games this season as compared to the 30+ starts in the three campaigns prior to this one has made Saul eager to leave Wanda Metropolitano.

His current contract, which expires in 2026, contains a massive release clause of £129million. However, Diego Simeone’s side could entertain an offer of around £69million for the 26-year-old midfielder.

Better sign Saul

The report adds that several suitors have come forth in the ‘past few hours’. Saul is a quality midfielder that would add heaps of competition as well as depth to United’s midfield.

While Fred, Paul Pogba, and Scott McTominay have been dependable starters over the course of this season, Saul Niguez has the potential to displace one of them from the starting XI and make it his own.

And that is the least anyone would expect from him given the fee being quoted for him. However, it remains to be seen if United would be able to fork out the aforementioned amount to sign Saul.

But if they want to do it, money could well be the only stumbling block. That is because Diego Simeone and team ‘would not frown’ upon the player’s decision to depart in the summer but they would still place a hefty fee on his head. (h/t The Express)
