Manchester United star Marcus Rashford had the honour of captaining the England national team against Romania and scored the only goal of the game (h/t BBC).

The English forward started the game alongside Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Jadon Sancho in the attack as the Three Lions aimed to win their last international friendly match before the Euros.

The match was largely uneventful. However, the deadlock was finally broken around 20 minutes from time. Jack Grealish was fouled inside the box and Rashford stepped up to take it.

The 23-year-old seemed nervous as he stepped up to take it and took his time to get his shot away. But his effort easily beat Romania’s goalkeeper, who failed to dive as the kick went into the bottom right corner.

Rashford makes his mark

However, Rashford did not really have a lot of good moments apart from his goal. He was taken off in the 75th minute as another United player, Jesse Lingard, made his way onto the pitch.

This appearance for Rashford came after the news that he will be undergoing surgery at the end of the Euros. The United winger has endured a few injuries over the course of the season and could miss the start of the 2021/22 season after going under the knife.

There was no way that Rashford would have wanted to miss representing England on such a grand stage and he has made the 26-man squad for the tournament. His words on Twitter after he captained England showed exactly what it meant to him.

“I’ve always been in the mindset that you don’t need an armband to be a leader on the pitch but I can’t lie, this feeling is unexplainable. Thank you @England what an honour [England flag emoji, heart emoji].”
