Transfer News: Manchester City believe they can win Jack Grealish ahead of United
According to ESPN, Manchester City believe they can ‘win the race’ for Manchester United transfer target Jack Grealish in the summer.
Aston Villa completed the signing of Emiliano Buendia for a £33million fee earlier. And that has given the Citizens the confidence to get a move for Grealish over the line.
The report states that Pep Guardiola sees the English midfielder, who signed a 5-year contract at Villa in 2020, as an important signing despite also targeting Harry Kane to fill the void left by the outgoing Sergio Aguero.
It is not surprising to see United’s rivals all over the 25-year-old midfielder. He has impressed hugely at Aston Villa this season, which is why the club values him at around £100million.
Red or Blue?
There is no doubt that Grealish would significantly strengthen United’s midfield. But in all honesty, the club should focus on signing either a central defender, a right-back, and/or a right-winger.
United’s defensive frailties hit us on several occasions during this campaign. The lack of depth in defence was felt the most when Harry Maguire was injured towards the end of the season, with United succumbing in the UEFA Europa League final against Villarreal.
However, a downside of losing out on Jack Grealish to Manchester City would be the fact that he would strengthen a direct rival. United were the second-best team in England this season, finishing behind the Citizens on the league table.

And the focus of the club, including Ed Woodward and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, should be on closing that gap. The ideal way to do it would be to make signings that add depth in important areas of the pitch.
