Manchester United considering switching Aaron Wan-Bissaka to centre-back in pre-season

According to a report by The Sun, Manchester United want to play Aaron Wan-Bissaka as a centre-back in pre-season.

The English right-back joined United from Crystal Palace in the summer of 2019 for an initial £45m fee. And since then, he has played down the right-hand side.

But it seems that the Red Devils want to play him as a central defender in a back four, or as a right-sided centre back in a three-man backline. His great tackling and speed make him an ideal fit for the position. (h/t The Sun)

The 23-year-old was overlooked by Gareth Southgate when selecting the England squad for the Euros as he went on to pick four right-backs, leaving Wan-Bissaka out.

Trent Alexander-Arnold has now pulled out of the squad because of an injury. But he initially made the team alongside Kyle Walker, Kieran Trippier, and Reece James in that position. This irked John Barnes.

The Liverpool legend mentioned that Wan-Bissaka is the best right-back in England and was overlooked only because he is not as good as others in possession of the ball.

“Look at Aaron Wan-Bissaka – he is our best right-back by far in this country. But because he is not as good on the ball as the others, he got unfairly overlooked.”

The report goes on to state that United are keen on signing Kieran Tripper. The Atletico Madrid full-back would provide competition to the former Palace defender at right-back.

More Manchester United News:

It seems like a good experiment to carry out considering the flexibility it would provide to United. A right-back that can play as a centre-back would mean that Ole Gunnar Solskjaer could experiment with different formations with relative ease as well.
