Manchester United star Bruno Fernandes could only look on in silence as Villarreal held aloft the Europa League trophy after what was a gut-wrenching penalty shootout loss for the Red Devils.

The 26-year-old, the captain on the night, was arguably the club’s best player of the season. However, all the promise came to nought as we eventually ended up trophyless for the fourth straight campaign.

The images of a teary-eyed Fernandes after the match is one of the enduring pictures of the night. However, if the Portuguese maestro is to be trusted, there is always much to be learnt from defeat.

Fernandes took to Twitter to make a motivational post that called upon the power of teamwork. He believes the United squad can rally and go on to achieve much better things in the future.

While we certainly commend his belief and words, he will also do well to walk the talk when the going gets tough. Fernandes has too often gone missing in big matches, making his usual pre-match words seem hollow.

Fernandes struggled to make an impact against Villarreal

The same happened in Gdansk where he hardly had a sniff against an arguably inferior Villarreal side. As some say, change should come from within. Hopefully, Fernandes too can lead from the front, especially so when the team needs him.

The majority of the fans however responded well to Fernandes’ post and made their support for him known. We take a look at a few of them below.
