Manchester United star Hannibal Mejbri reveals why he chose to represent Tunisia at the international level
According to RMC Sport (h/t Manchester Evening News), Manchester United wonderkid Hannibal Mejbri has opened up on why he chose to represent Tunisia at the international level.
The youngster is amongst the best young players in the United academy. He even made his senior debut on the final day against Wolverhampton Wanderers.
Mejbri has represented France at the youth level, making numerous appearances for their Under-16 and Under-17 sides. Compared to David Beckham and Roy Keane, a bright future is expected of the 18-year-old.
“I think that it is the best decision for my family and me.”
The Tunisian FA unveiled Mejbri at a rather extravagant ceremony recently. While continuing to represent France might have been more appealing, Mejbri admits that his decision to represent Tunisia was not purely due to sporting reasons.
He has no doubts regarding his decision and admits family played a role in his call. He believes he has an affinity to the nation and is keen to wear the colours of his parents’ heritage.
“I am very proud of this decision. Tunisia is my country, the country of my parents so for sure there is a strong complicity.”
A happy decision
Mejbri went on to add that his parents were happy with his decision and were overjoyed with his ‘gift’ to them. He is keen to build something special with the Africans and might etch his name in folklore.
“It is like a present for them. But it makes me happy too. I think that I made the right choice. We will see in the future if that is the case. I am trying to build something, not purely on the sporting side.”
There is no reason why Mejbri cannot change the fate of Tunisian football. Securing him was nothing short of a coup and his development will be viewed with much interest.
