Manchester United fans react as Edinson Cavani wins the goal of the month award for May
It was never in doubt and according to the club’s official site, Edinson Cavani has won the Manchester United Goal of the Month award for May for his wonder strike against Fulham.
The Uruguayan veteran welcomed fans back to Old Trafford with a long-distance strike that caught Fulham goalkeeper Alphonse Areola flat-footed. It was the coup de grace from the striker in what has been an exciting first season in the Premier League.
At 35.2 metres out, it is the longest distance from which a goal was scored in the Premier League this season. While some may argue it to be offside, nobody can take anything away from the finish.
The strike was the runaway winner in our poll, claiming 78% of the votes. That’s the 34-year-old’s third win of the campaign, drawing him level with Bruno Fernandes. He had earlier won the awards in December 2020 and April 2021.
Cavani’s goal has also been voted the Premier League Goal of the Month for May. Having also been voted as the club’s player of the month, May has been a productive month for the veteran striker.
Having penned a contract extension until 2022, the Uruguayan ace will now aim to wow audiences with his exploits for another season. If the 2020/21 season is anything to go by, we are in for a treat.
We now take a look at how fans reacted to the news on Twitter.
