Glazers in talks with Jorge Mendes to seal Cristiano Ronaldo deal

Manchester United transfer news: Glazers hold talks with Jorge Mendes regarding Cristiano Ronaldo

According to The Express, Manchester United owners Glazers have held talks with superagent Jorge Mendes regarding a move for Cristiano Ronaldo.

The 36-year-old, despite his age, remains one of the best players in world football. He led the Serie A scoring charts last season as Juventus ensured Champions League qualification on the final day.

It was a largely forgettable season for the Turin giants who relinquished their Italian crown to Inter Milan. Ronaldo who curiously admitted to having achieved everything he wanted at Juventus has been backed to leave the club in the summer.

Ronaldo spent six seasons at United before moving to Real Madrid in 2009. It was at Old Trafford that he developed from a promising youngster to a world-class player.

A return to the Theatre of Dreams has been mooted ever since he left United. This summer, it looks to be a real possibility rather than just wishful talk.

Juventus for all their success have not been spared the financial aftershocks of the coronavirus pandemic. Ronaldo currently earns a whopping  £350,000-a-week in Turin and the Italians are keen to get him off their wage bill.

The United owners, under pressure themselves, are eyeing big-name signings this summer. Not only would Ronaldo certainly fit the bill, but manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is still in touch with his former teammate.

A return to familiar haunts?

According to the report, Ronaldo is tempted by the idea of an emotional homecoming. The Portuguese ace had previously told Sir Alex Ferguson that he’d come back, only for the situation to change.

According to Italian outlet La Gazzetta Dello Sport (h/t Manchester Evening News), new Juventus manager, Massimiliano Allegri has not vetoed the idea of permitting Ronaldo the exit.

The Italian had advocated for the same in 2018 and could now finally get his way. With the omens looking in our favour, it remains to be seen how far we are willing to go to land the player.

The United that Ronaldo left will not be the same one he will potentially return to. Gone are the days when we could just turn up and expected to be crowned champions.

Under Solskjaer, United aren’t just looking to get back to the top but are also trying to discover their identity. If Ronaldo can return to lead us to the promised land, his name will forever be enshrined in United folklore.
