Man United to implement advanced technology for offsides next season

Manchester United stars could soon be judged by automated technology in the Premier League

According to The Daily Mail, Manchester United may come across new Premier League technology that could make it easier for referees to judge offside calls.

The English top-flight is now a step closer to use the technology after a successful trial at a top-flight club. The ‘skeletal player tracking system’, developed by HawkEye provides an instant message to the referee.

This will drastically cut down the time taken for the officials to make a decision. VAR has often come under the scanner for calls that have been largely marginal this season.

Match officials would still have to determine whether the offside player was interfering with play, but will now no longer have to draw on offside lines as with VAR.

Despite the implementation, the interpretation of the rules by those referees making use of it has often been the issue. This is especially so in the case of close calls where decisions could go either way.

It was revealed in October 2019 that the league were exploring the use of limb-tracking technology to provide instant calls on offsides. The system has since undergone a successful trial at a Premier League club for the last year.

For now, four teams namely Liverpool, Chelsea, Manchester City and Manchester United will have it in place next season. The system could be fully operational from 2023.

Premier League officials are in favour of the HawkEye system’s rapid response. Hopefully, it will make out lives easier and not leave any room open to debate at least as far as offside calls are concerned.

With technology evolving all around us every single day, it is imperative that it is used in daily walks of life including sports. Whether the proposed implementation will be a gamechanger for the Premier League remains to be seen.
