Solskjaer calls for Manchester United to invest in the squad after Europa League heartbreak
It was supposed to be the night of deliverance for Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer on the night of the Europa League final. Instead, it unravelled into what can only be seen as a disappointing loss to Villarreal.
Playing in their first major final under the Norwegian, United could not find a way past Unai Emery’s Yellow Submarine in the Europa League final.
Our current campaign may have ended in heartbreak but Solskjaer, for his part, is already planning ahead.
According to The Metro, Solskjaer has urged the club to bring in new players this summer as he looks to continue his project. We may have fallen short this time around but the Norwegian is keen to ensure it is just another brick in the wall.
“As I’ve said, two or three players to strengthen the starting XI and the squad altogether is important for us to go even further.”
While United have done well, there are some glaring deficiencies in the squad that needs addressing. This transfer window offers us an excellent opportunity to do just that.
Laying bare our problems!
If bringing in the right players was a priority ahead of the final, it becomes all the more essential now. Solskjaer believes adding reinforcements to his existing options will see us emerge as regular contenders in the future.
United have had some scintillating performances this season. However, we have also often depended on the individual brilliance of Marcus Rashford and Bruno Fernandes to get us out of trouble.
Emery’s game plan saw both players shut out for the majority of the game, leaving us unable to break them down. Moreover, this also highlighted the lack of attacking options on the bench.

United now have to back up their manager and get the work done behind the scenes. All the progress made this season will be for nought if we do not build from this position of strength.
Whether Solskjaer will get his reinforcements remains to be seen.
