Ole Gunnar Solskjaer opens up on the future of Manchester United ace Fred
Speaking to BT Sport (h/t The Daily Star), Manchester United boss, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has provided a hint regarding the future of Fred at Old Trafford.
The Brazilian has experienced a new lease of life under Solskjaer and has emerged as a key player for United. Alongside Scott McTominay, he was arguably the preferred pairing in defensive midfield.
He was however dropped for the showpiece event in favour of Paul Pogba. Fred was brought on in the 10th minute of extra time but wasn’t able to make much of a difference.
The 28-year-old’s biggest contribution of the night came during the penalty shootout. He was sixth in line for United and dispatched his spot-kick with ease.
Despite making 48 appearances for the club this season, Fred continues to be linked with a move away. Solskjaer is keen to strengthen his midfield and could seek an upgrade on the Brazilian.
Speaking to the press, Solskjaer has hinted that Fred remains a major player for the club. It comes as little surprise given the growth he has shown under the Norwegian.
“We missed two big ones today with Fred and Harry [Maguire]. We have a strong, competitive squad.”
While it is pretty thin, it would hint that the player’s future lies at United. Fred’s performances also recently got him called up to the Brazilian national team.
