“Be patient” – Scholes singles out this Man United star for criticism after Europa League tragedy

Paul Scholes frustrated with Manchester United star Marcus Rashford

According to BT Sport (h/t The Express), Manchester United legend Paul Scholes was largely unimpressed by Marcus Rashford in the club’s Europa League loss to Villarreal last night.

The 23-year-old cut a fatigued figure as the Red Devils were unable to make their quality count. Having played through injury this season, it is fair to say that the Englishman may not be at his peak fitness.

Rashford started the night on the left flank, in a front three that also included Edinson Cavani and Mason Greenwood. Having been rested for the weekend, the expectation was for us to put Unai Emery’s side to the sword.

The 23-year-old also had an excellent opportunity to put United ahead in the second half. Unfortunately, he scuffed his shot wide and the scores stayed level.

It is debatable if the ‘goal’ would have stood had the ball gone in. There were suggestions of offside in the buildup, but now we will never know.

Scholes believes Rashford appeared impatient on the pitch and urged him to be calmer. The United legend believes Rashford is doing himself a disservice by cutting in rather than stay out wide.

“I think they need to be a little bit more patient, Marcus Rashford especially.”

It was a frustrating night for Rashford

The urge to be patient!

“So many times he’s coming inside, his first touch hasn’t been good, he’s running into people.”

There was little joy for United going forward as Unai Emery’s Villarreal shackled Bruno Fernandes nice and tight. It must be admitted that even our equalizer came via a deflection that fell in Edinson Cavani’s way.

“Just stay out there, be patient, and your chances will come.”

As a United man through and through, Rashford was keen to make a difference on the night. We for one cannot fault him for coming in centrally as there was little much of note being created in the attack.

While Scholes’ opinions are welcome, a large share of the blame also has to lie with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. It is now twice in two seasons that we have looked fatigued in our final European game of the campaign.

It is no secret that the likes of Rashford have endured a bruising season and the United boss should have shown better squad management. If not throughout the season, at least on the night.
