Manchester United set to sign Aston Villa goalkeeper Tom Heaton
According to The Athletic (Subscription Required), Aston Villa goalkeeper Tom Heaton is all set to join Manchester United in the upcoming summer transfer window.
The 35-year-old has been at Villa Park for the last two seasons. With his contract expiring this summer, United will be getting themselves a free transfer.
The Red Devils have already held talks with Heaton this month. The former England international has agreed to rejoin the club and will serve as an understudy to David de Gea and Dean Henderson.
Heaton was once at Manchester United but failed to make it to the first-team. He was eventually let go. Now, it looks like we are returning for the veteran Englishman.
He will take the place of Argentine shot-stopper Sergio Romero, who is out of contract in the summer. With him set to leave, Heaton will act as a stop-gap in case we need to call upon him next season.
Moreover, having come through the United academy, he will add to the squad as a homegrown player. At 35, one could assume this is his final opportunity to move to a big club.
A one time English international, Heaton has won three caps for the Three Lions. Currently, behind Emiliano Martinez at Villa, Heaton’s chances of regular playtime are low, to begin with.

Heaton might as well spend time sitting on the bench at United compared to Villa. After all the Red Devils have a better shot of seeing him end his career on a high.
With the likes of Joel Pereira and Lee Grant also set to call it quits, it appears to a summer of overhaul in the goalkeeping department at United.
