Wolves fan arrested for racially abusing Manchester United legend Rio Ferdinand

Manchester United legend Rio Ferdinand was at the receiving end of a racist gesture during our 2-1 win over Wolverhampton Wanderers at the Molineux.

The Englishman took to Twitter after full-time yesterday to vent his frustration at the fan’s antics. Ferdinand condoned his actions and promised to educate him as to what it feels like to be at the end of such vile behaviour.

The incident marred what was a fine performance by a young United side. Anthony Elanga scored his first senior goal for the club while the likes of Hannibal Mejbri and Will Fish made their first team debuts.

Wolves to their credit were quick to apologize to Ferdinand for the experience. They confirmed that the person in question has been arrested and now faces a life-time ban from the club.

While we agree that one man does not speak for the majority, it is disappointing that certain ‘fans’ stoop to such behaviour on a day that they were finally allowed to return to stadiums.

According to The Guardian, the 31-year-old has now been arrested and it remains to be seen what action will be taken against him. There should be absolute zero tolerance towards such behaviour.

There were unsavoury incidents elsewhere too in the Premier League on the night. The Chelsea vs Aston Villa Park was marred by boos as the player took the knee ahead of kick-off.

While it was eventually drowned out by those in favour of the gesture, Villa ace Tyrone Mings was left unimpressed. It is fair to say that despite all the efforts taken in recent times, there remains a large number of these so called ‘fans’ who just refuse to change.

If this weekend has proven anything, it is that we cannot let off in our efforts to combat racism and inequality not just in sport but in society. The matter is far from being resolved but clubs cannot and should not tolerate it in any form.
